July Member Spotlight - Joel Iocey

I am a Cincinnati native, born and raised. I grew up in a family of three boys. My brothers and I were always active in sports. In school I played soccer and gymnastics. This always kept me in pretty good shape. Like many people, I believed this would always be the case, however when I hit my forties I discovered I was wrong. In my youth I had acquired some bad habits, smoking, poor diet etc... These bad habits caught up with me. I was getting the "love handles" and if I tried to exercise, it was difficult because I couldn't breathe due to my smoking. When I hit fifty I decided I had to make some changes. First I changed my diet. I cut out the sugars and fats. I started eating a vegetarian based diet. This helped but my smoking habit was still a major obstacle. A year and a half ago I decided I had to quit smoking. I managed to kick the habit, but put on 30 lbs in the process. After 4 months of no smoking, I felt my lungs start to recover and decided that it was time to get rid of the weight I had gained. I tried exercising at home but couldn't get a proper routine together that fit my needs. That's when I discovered MAC. I immediately felt at home and they had all the equipment I was looking for and more. I have since been able to get rid of the extra weight and feel better than ever. I have found that bad habits are hard to break, but I find it much easier if rather than trying to break them, replace them with good habits. My hope is that I've added some quality years to my life that I can spend with my granddaughter Natalie!
