Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I was born in New York City and lived in the Bronx,Queens, and Staten Island. I went to upstate New York to Oswego University to get my teaching degree. For four years, I lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where I did my student teaching. I then moved to England for ten years, where I met, fell in love with, and married my wife Barbara who had two children. I currently teach at Cincinnati Country Day School and live in Old Milford.
What led you to join MAC?
When I lived in Rio de Janeiro, I was introduced to aerobics by a friend of mine. I kept it up and when I moved in England and it was one of the ways Barbara and I kept in shape. When decided to come back to The United States to raise our kids, Betsy and David, we bought a home in Old Milford. We immediately looked for a place to workout in Milford and at the time we signed up MAC was Royal Athletics. That was 23 or 24 years ago and we have been there ever since!
Personal Success Story:
One of my biggest stories happened about 10 years ago. I was misdiagnosed with appendicitis. Everything went wrong. My appendix burst, I went into a coma and I developed septicemia. It looked really bad. I underwent three surgeries and had 2 feet of intestines removed and numerous blood transfusions and survived. There were two things that made this possible. One was the love of a good woman. Barbara was with me the whole time and fought like a pitbull to make sure the doctors did what they had to do. The other was being in shape. The doctors and the nurses were convinced that if I was not in as good shape as I was, I would not have survived any of it. All of the weight training with machines and class workouts really paid off in the most amazing way. One of the first things I did when I walked back into MAC (Royal at the time) was I went and hugged all of the instructors that I had worked with in the past and told them that they had played an important part in saving my life. It took a good three to six months to get back to where I am now. I started slowly with yoga classes, then went back to using some of the machines. Currently, I do Kathy's and Maggie's insane 5:30 am classes, and Pop Pilates with Kelsey, Zumba on Monday and Wednesday and rock the treadmills every chance I get. And I love every minute of it! I can honestly say I feel better when I work out then when I don't work out. Yes, my name is Ully, and I'm a workout junkie! Don't judge!
Words of advice:
My words of advice to anyone is to find something you like and stick with it. Ask for help when you need it, and when you get good at it, add something new. Just keep going from there! And the best place to start is at the MAC!
